Championship Pro Wrestling - September 18, 1999 - Martinsburg, WV Print E-mail
Friday, September 17, 1999

Both major Championship Pro Wrestling titles changed hands at the CPW card held at the Berkeley County Fairgrounds in Martinsburg, WV, on September 18.

Attendance estimated at well into the double figures. Ring announcer: JEFF AMDUR (yes, you read that one right). Timekeeper at the bell: JOE PERRY. Referees for the evening: PATRICK LAWSON and BRIAN LOGAN. Senior referee Lawson was also appointed by commissioner in absentia MAJOR MAYHEM to be in charge of the evening's proceedings.

Also observed in the audience was ATCW promoter MIKE BRANSON. The early-evening moisture at this outdoor card created somewhat slippery ring conditions, as the mat surface was vinyl and the ring crew wiped it off after every match.

MATCH 1: ALEX ARION pinned "BRUTAL" BOB EVANS in 7:51. Evans spent much of the match taunting the cozy gathering of fans as well as trying to get away with some underhanded maneuvers out of the view of the referee. That was to no avail, as Alex eventually hit a cross body and covered for the pin. After the match, Evans and referee Lawson got into a shoving match which left Brutal Bob lying on the mat.

As the combatants made their way to the ring for the next match, they were accompanied not only by manager SPIKE CALLAHAN but also CPW champion "SEXY" SHANE SHADOWS. As Shane was dissing both the crowd and the referee, he could not help but notice that the concessionaire for the evening was none other than "ROCK & ROLL" BOB KELLER. Keller took the mike and said that since he had been kept off this card by Shadows's machinations, he had secured the concession rights for the evening in order to be at the card. In between his shilling the crowd to buy those chips, sodas and twizzlers, Keller challenged Shadows to a match later that evening. Shane refused, saying that he had already been booked to defend his title in the main event against MIDDKNIGHT, and he was doing this in spite of his having an infected toenail.

Senior referee Lawson came back to the ring and told Shane that indeed he would sanction a match for later in the evening between Shadows and Keller. Both Shadows and Callahan protested and threatened a lawsuit. Lawson replied with a threat of a 30-day suspension if Shadows refused to wrestle that match.

MATCH 2: THE COMBAT KID & "SPAZMAN" BRIAN ANTHONY (with SPIKE CALLAHAN, NICKI SIN, & SHANE SHADOWS) won the tag team title with a 14:10 pin fall over DOC HOLLYWOOD & SWITCHBLADE. During the match, concessionaire Keller sat in the stands and heckled Shane and company. The early going was all Kid and Spaz double teaming Doc; but a hot tag by Switch seemed to even things up for a while. With brawling going on in and out of the ring, the ref wasn't looking when Switchblade hit a double clothesline and covered Combat. Shadows then entered the ring and clubbed Switch with a kendo stick, which enabled Combat to cover for the pin and to win the title.

Ref-in-charge Lawson once again called Shadows back to ringside, and told him that not only would he be wrestling Keller in the main event, but also, that his title defense against Middknight, which had been booked as the main event, would be moved up to right now--the third position. Shane protested; but Lawson re-asserted the authority that had been given him by "that white shirt Heimberger who pays the bills", and said that Shane will wrestle right now because he says so. Shane reluctantly agreed, while cursing "that loser Heimberger".

MATCH 3: "SEXY" SHANE SHADOWS (with SPIKE CALLAHAN) successfully defended the CPW heavyweight title with an 8:24 pin over MIDDNIGHT after an over-the-ropes sunset flip.

MATCH 4: MR. CLYDE (with MISS BONNIE) pinned DAVE MYSTERIO in 5:46. Dave had Clyde pinned; but the ref was being distracted by Bonnie, who was also videotaping the match. Dave went to argue with the ref and was hit from behind by what was described by Joe Perry as a " "reverse atomic neckbreaker".

MATCH 5: THE THRILL KILL CULT ("PRANC...",er, oops, I mean "DANCIN" RICHIE STEVENS & DIABLOS MACABRE, with MIDDKNIGHT) pinned ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS (BIG BUBBA NUCKOLS & RED DOG, with SAHARA) in 2:20, as Diablos got the pin on Red Dog after a double DDT.

MATCH 6: PROFESSOR EGON ECTON vs. NICK "DA BULL" FURY disintegrated after about two minutes, as the participants in the succeeding "total chaos battle royal" decided to start that event early.

The rules of the "battle royal", which was to determine the first CPW hardcore champion, were the reverse of the usual battle royal rules. The hardcore belt would be placed in the middle of the ring. The combatants would start the battle out of the ring, and the first wrestler to come into the ring and grab the belt would win the battle and be declared the hardcore champion. As the combatants approached the ring, Egon and Nick continued their match, but eventually gave up and joined the fray. As Nick left the ring to join the match, Ecton attempted to declare himself winner of the title, as he was the only person in the ring. Ref Logan didn't buy it, and ordered the Prof out to wrestle in the fray.

MATCH 7: DIABLOS MACABRE became the first ever "hardcore champion" in CPW by winning the "total chaos battle royal", grabbing the belt in the middle of the ring in 6:53.

As the main event title match, ordered by ref-in-charge Lawson, came to the ring, Shane Shadows tried as many delaying tactics as possible to get out of the match. He spent some time fielding questions from the fans, until one girl, when asked if she had a question, replied that he "wasn't worth asking a question to". He then complained to referee Logan that the mat was too wet. He eventually got into the ring--and maybe he shouldn't have.

MATCH 8: "ROCK & ROLL" BOB KELLER became the new CPW champion by by pinning "SEXY" SHANE SHADOWS (with SPIKE CALLAHAN) in 8:52. The tone of the match was set immediately, as Keller's first move was the dreaded testicular claw. The end was near as Spike managed to distract ref Logan long enough for Shane to Pearl Harbor the ref from behind. Shane started to move on Bob; but was met by the undershirt-clad senior ref Lawson, who hit the undershirt-cold stunner on Shadows. Keller followed with a couple of leg drops, and then covered for the pin that was counted by Lawson. The ref handed Keller the belt. R&R celebrated as Shane and Spike didn't seem to be too happy about it.
