East Coast Wrestling Association - October 21, 2000 - Newport, DE Print E-mail
Friday, October 20, 2000
A change of attitude from the ECWA champion, an uneasy tag-team pairing between two bitter rivals, the formation of an alliance between the "King of the East Coast Indies" and the "King of the West Coast Indies", and the shocking beating given the parents of the ECWA's teenage-sensation tag team highlighted the East Coast Wrestling Association's card at the home base of St. Matthew's Parish Hall in Newport, DE, on October 21. It was a card that saw the finalization of the feuds and battle lines leading to next month's series of showdowns at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Attendance, confirmed by promoter JIM KETTNER, was 400. Manning the ECWAtron video screen: "FLYIN" RYAN. Ring announcer: CHUCK RISTANO. Timekeeper at the bell: JEFF AMDUR. Referees for the evening: BOB DENSMORE, ROCK AUSTIN and LARRY PEACE.

Taking pictures at ringside for the media: JOE ZANOLLE and BRANDI MANKIEWICZ. Taking pictures for reasons known best to himself: BERNIE "KNEEPADS" DIEHL, as well as TIM NOEL from cable-access land in Richmond. Also in attendance: PCW promoter BLAINE DeSANTIS; wrestlers JACEY NORTH and JUDAS YOUNG; Internet icons BRETT SCHWAN and BOB & SARGE MAGEE; "Hawaiian Hat Guy" JOHN BAILEY and his entourage; and the large contingent of Briscoe Brothers fans who made the trip up from Laurel on the eastern shore.

The NATIONAL ANTHEM was played in 1:38, once again the "Ryan's Digest Condensed Version". (So, where *is* the instrumental for the part between "Oh, say ..." and "... last gleaming"?

CHUCK RISTANO introduced local disk jockets JOHN CARLO and BRIAN DiMARIO from WRDX Radio (Classic Rock 93.7), who tossed WRDX water bottles to the crowd and announced that they would be broadcasting live from the Bob Carpenter Center during the ECWAxtravaganza coming up the night of November 25.

MATCH 1: THUNDER pinned MONSIEUR OOH LA LA (with BARRY CASINO) in 10:28. Ooh went for some early submissions; but Thunder wouldn't give up to nerve holds or a sleeper. Thunder battled back with power moves and a ddt before covering for the pin.

Before the second match could start, KEVIN KELLY and the rest of the CONNECTICUT CONNECTION, consisting of INFERNO, RUSS HAAS and CHARLIE HAAS, made an appearance. Inferno, who had lost the ECWA heavyweight title back to J.J. at last week's Laurel High School card, made a public apology to Kelly ("the only man who had faith in me") for "dropping the ball" and said that he wanted a title shot on the next St. Matthew's card (January 20) against the winner of the J.J.-CHEETAH MASTER showdown that was to headline the Bob Carpenter Center card. He blamed Cheetah directly for his October 14 title loss.

Kelly then announced to the crowd that the Haas Brothers had just signed a WWF developmental contract. Russ then took the mike to express his gratitude but was unable to finish his statement as tears welled up in his eyes and he became (as Linda Richman would say) visibly "verklemmt". Charlie, likewise verklemmt but able to put his thoughts forward in complete sentences, then took the mike and asked the crowds indulgence, stating, "I have a long list of people who we'd like to thank for helping get us to the WWF. First, I'd like to thank Kevin Kelly [pause]. That's the end of the list."

Kelly then took pot shots at the Briscoe Brothers and their "inbred fans from Laurel, Delaware" and also at the "one-eyed freak" TY STREET, challenging him to a match at the Bob Carpenter Center card. Street came out, with the patch still over the eye that had been burned by Kelly at the last St. Matthew's card, stating, "I hate to be like Al Gore, but let me interrupt". He ridiculed Inferno's "really bad bleach job", saying it was simply an effort for Inferno to look more like Ty. He razzed on the Haases' "development contract", noticing that most males "develop" at a much earlier age than the twentysomething Haases. He accepted Kelly's challenge. Kelly promised that he would "take out your other eye" at the Bob. Ty said he would have both eyes closed and still beat Kelly. Kelly gloated, not realizing the full impact of Ty's last statement, as the match that has been signed will be a "Prince of Darkness" match where both Ty and Kevin will have black shrouds over their heads and it will be up to the fans to navigate the "blinded" wrestlers around the ring.

MATCH 2: In his return to the ECWA as an active wrestler, RECKLESS YOUTH pinned "THE BLACK NATURE BOY" SCOOT ANDREWS in 11:51. Reckless proved to be his high-risk old self as he drop kicked Scoot out of the ring early on, hit the returning Scoot with a flying head scissors and backdropping him back over the ropes out of the ring. Urged on by the crowd chants of "Youth! Youth! Youth!", Reckless dove over the rope onto Scoot on the floor. Andrews evened things up with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker and got a 2-count. Scott cornered Reckless with some chops before Youth battled back with a modified top-rope Frankensteiner. Scoot then retaliated by hauling Reckless over the top rope. Back in the ring, Scoot got a 2-count after slamming Reckless. Andrews missed a top-rope sit-in. Reckless hit a moonsault and got a 2-count. Scoot hit a superplex and got a 2-count. Reckless hit his "Youth movement" splash but could only get a 2-count. Reckless finally got the pin after hitting a move that I'll call a side suplex slam (If I don't know what you call a move, I'll make something up).

The ECWAtron camera then took us backstage, as strategy was being formed for the four-way tag team dance that would happen later this evening. This match is yet another obstacle put in the way of the Briscoe Brothers, who had thought they earned a tag title shot at the Bob for their non-title victory over the Haas Brothers last week in Laurel. The winner of tonight's four-way would get the November 25 title shot at the Haases. KEVIN KELLY cornered two of the teams, MOZART FONTAINE & EDDIE VALENTINE and VINCE GOODNITE & JOHNNY MAXX and told them that it was imperative that the Briscoes be eliminated, saying that he would "take care of whatever team takes care of the Briscoes". Kelly also tried some tough-guy tactics on referee LARRY PEACE, as he tried to get from Larry the name of the fourth tag team that would be in tonight's match. Larry said he didn't know.

MATCH 3: The Mid-Atlantic title match between champion GLEN OSBOURNE and challenger PATCH (with BARRY CASINO) was thrown out by the referee at 9:31 when both wrestlers battled back to the locker room and were counted out. Both wrestlers brawled around the arena. The end came as Patch followed a leg to Oz's crotch with some Flair chops and a bridge for a 2-count. Glen came back with a ddt, getting a 2-count. In an attempt to give Patch one working testicle to go with the one working eye, Osbourne followed with a leg and elbow drop, both to Patch's scrotal area. When Glen missed an attempt at a flying Lewinsky, Patch threw him out of the ring. The two brawled back to the dressing room area, followed by the ECWAtron camera that captured the action.

It took almost the whole locker room to subdue the two battlers. Finally, commissioner B.W. BROWN restored order. He then announced that he would now reveal who the fourth tag team for tonight's number-one tag contenders battle. He had the names of all ECWA wrestlers (except for the teams already participating and for the champions) in a bag, and would pick two names at random, with those two forming the team. Much to B.W's consternation, the two names he picked out just happened to be ...

PATCH and GLEN OSBOURNE. Oy, gevalt (If i may say that while reporting a show held in a church hall)!!! Kevin Kelly and the Haas Brothers could be seen smirking in the background.

Next in the ring came VIPER and CARNAGE, scheduled for the next match. Viper took the mike and told the crowd that he had no use at all for the fans, especially children. He recounted how, when meeting a "snot-nosed freckle-face little brat", he pushed her away after she said she liked him. He also suggested that he would take great satisfaction in ruining kids' trick-or-treats this year, offering ways that he would do so.

MATCH 4: The match between BRUTE FORCE (VIPER & CARNAGE) and FELIPE THE POOL BOY & "BIG" BENNY STOLZFUS was declared no contest by commissioner B.W. BROWN in 2:29. Felipe came out first, with Benny nowhere in sight. Pool Boy was immediately double-teamed by Brute Force. After hitting Felipe with the death drop, Viper and Carnage knocked out the referee. When Benny belatedly arrived in the ring, he was likewise double-teamed by BF. Viper again took the mike to deliver another anti-children rant. This was interrupted by commissioner B.W. BROWN, who said that while he was making no apologies for his actions of recent months, he insisted that "never--ever--will anyone be picking on the kids here". TAFKABoogie Woogie and Benny then took out Viper and Carnage, who ran to the back. As "Beer Barrel Polka" blared over the p.a., Benny started to celebrate and asked Boogie to join in. Brown stood still for almost a minute, then went back to the lockers without celebrating.

The ECWAtron then eavesdropped on a conversation between GLEN OSBOURNE and KEVIN KELLY. Kelly begged Oz to settle his differences with Patch for this one tag match so they could "eviscerate" the Briscoes. Glen was noncommittal. In another part of the backstage area, Patch was equally noncommittal when the HAAS BROTHERS and Kelly asked him to "do things our way" this evening.

Returning to St. Matthew's for the first time since his victory in the 2000 Super Eight tournament, CHRISTOPHER DANIELS took the mike to thank the crowd for his having earned their "respect", whether they had booed him or cheered him in the tournament. This was interrupted by the arrival of 1999 Super Eight winner STEVE BRADLEY, who reminded Daniels that he had defeated Chris for the title in 1999, and had not been in the 2000 version that Chris had won. He challenged Daniels to settle it right now who was the baddest "moe foe" on the show". I sat there wondering what possible prestige one would earn by declaring himself the number one adversary of the leader of the Three Stooges. To each his own.

MATCH 5: "FALLEN ANGEL" CHRISTOPHER DANIELS and STEVE BRADLEY battled and brawled to an 8:58 double disqualification as other wrestlers interfered. Daniels started out with a stiff drop kick that sent Steve out of the ring. He followed with a high-arc dive off the top turnbuckle. Daniels slammed Bradley into the ring post, then back in the ring, got a 2-count after a clothesline. Bradley countered with a maneuver that started out as a crucifix but turned into an inverted power bomb. Bradley then caught Daniels with a knee as Chris rebounded off the rope. Bradley's missile drop kick landed flush on Daniels's face and was followed by a 2-count. Fallen Angel got his own 2-count after an over-the-head hair haul and inverted atomic drop. Another Daniels 2-count followed a thrust slam and moonsault. Daniels then kicked Steve, and the wobbly Bradley crashed into the referee, who fell motionless to the mat. A Daniels cover for the pin went uncounted by the ko'd ref. As Chris turned to see what was with the ref, Steve Pearl Harbored him. Daniels retailiated with his "last rites" finisher. He covered Bradley once again, but the ref was still out of it. SCOOT ANDREWS, whom Daniels had beaten in this year's Super Eight finals, attacked Daniels. RECKLESS YOUTH arrived to attack Andrews. Bradley then dove onto everybody else. The referee finally regained consciousness to see that everything had gotten totally out of hand, and called for the bell and the double disqualification.

After the match, Reckless and Daniels challenged Bradley and Andrews to an impromptu match, but Steve and Scott went to the back.

The ECWAtron then played a video tribute to the 21 ECWA wrestlers who were in this years PWI 500. The two highest-ranked ECWA wrestlers were, ironically, CHRISTOPHER DANIELS and RECKLESS YOUTH, who had just formed an alliance.

MATCH 6: In a four-way tag team elimination match, JAY & MARK BRISCOE successfully leaped this most recent hurdle to earn the right to face the HAAS BROTHERS at the Bob Carpenter Center with an 18:48 victory over "MAXIMUM" JOHNNY MAXX & VINCE GOODNITE, "FAST" EDDIE VALENTINE & "FABULOUS" MOZART FONTAINE (with E.S. EASTON) and GLEN OSBOURNE & PATCH (with BARRY CASINO).

First fall: Much of the early action centered on Mozart being pummeled by various opponents. Both Goodnite and Maxx got near-falls after, respectively, a somersault flip and an atomic drop. Fontaine finally tagged to Valentine, who put Maxx in a sharpshooter only to be dropkicked off by Goodnite. All eight wrestlers then brawled in the ring, with Patch covering Maxx in 6:07 to eliminate Johnny and Vince.

Second fall: Valentine and Jay Briscoe started. Eddie delivered a rompecojones, then put Jay in a Boston crab, dragging him across the ring while doing so. Mozart tagged in and got a 2-count after a back suplex, with Mark Briscoe making the save. Jay followed with a savate kick, then both Briscoes deliverdd a Delaware Death Drop on Fontaine. Valentine tagged in and hit Jay with a tombstone, getting a 2-count as Mark hit him with a leap off the top turnbuckle for the save. Jay then covered Eddie as Mozart tried to make the save with a similar top-rope leap. The results were differenc as Jay moved and Mozart hit Eddie. Jay then tagged to Osbourne, who power bombed Valentine and covered for the pin in 13:52. Mozart and Eddie go bye-bye.

Third fall: Osbourne got an almost-immediate 2-count after power slamming Mark. Briscoe countered with headbutts to the stomach. Glen got 2-counts on Mark after some Flair chops and a choke slam. Marked punched back. Patch tagged in and hit a series of suplexes. He covered for several 2-counts, each time pulling Mark up at the count of 2. In the corner, Osbourne was getting visibly perturbed at his partner's not trying for the 3-count. Patch hit a back-breaker-times-four, as he bounced Mark's back up and down on his knee. He covered but again pulled Briscoe up at the count of two. By this time, Osbourne had taken all he could of his partner's shenanigans. He grabbed a chair and plonked Patch with it, then walked back to the lockers. With Patch semi-conscious, the Briscoes hit simultaneous leg drops from opposing top turnbuckles. Mark then covered for the pin.

Then came the aftermath.

Ugly, to say the least. Intense, to say the most.

Real intense.

The Briscoes had little time to celebrate their victory, as KEVIN KELLY and the HAAS BROTHERS attacked the Briscoes. From his seat in the crowd, the Briscoes' father, COACH MIKE PUGH, who still had a beef to settle with the Connecticut Connection from last week's show in Laurel, charged the ring and clotheslined both Haases. As he turned to help his sons, Pugh was attacked by the Haases. Kevin Kelly handcuffed the Coach to the top rope. They resumed their pummeling of Mark and Jay, with the helpless Coach going ballistic. MOTHER BRISCOE (a.k.a. JANA PUGH) then came to the ring to tend to her injured sons. Kevin Kelly grabbed her, prompting her to slap him back. Charlie Haas then schoolboyed (schoolgirled?) and cradled her, as brother Russ delivered to her the "Haas of Pain" elbow smash from a top-rope leap. The other folks who had come up from Laurel tried to leap the barrier and charge the ring and were held back by security personnel. ECWA promoter JIM KETTNER came out to try to calm the fans down, with a taunting Kevin Kelly delivering chair shots to the Briscoes as this was going on.

As intermission was announced so that MARTY KETTNER and the ring crew could put up the cage for the main event, the security folks were still trying to quell the hostility of the Briscoe supporters from Laurel. I was wondering whether Kelly or the Haases would need a heavy escort contingent at the end of the night just to exit without incident.

MATCH 7: CHEETAH MASTER & J.J. THE RING CREW GUY & TY STREET won the cage match against INFERNO & CHARLIE HAAS & RUSS HAAS (with KEVIN KELLY) in 14:57 as Ty made it out of the cage first. Street and Cheetah entered the ring first, to the strains of Cheetah's "Welcome to the Jungle" theme. J.J. entered later, to his own music, warmly shaking Ty's hand and very tentatively shaking Cheetah's. Even more tentative were the Haases and Inferno as they procrastinated in getting into the ring. Once they entered, they were clubbered by Ty, Cheetah and J.J. After about five minutes of this, the Connecticut Connection retaliated with chops and slams, then ramming all three opponents into the steel fencing. J.J. was bleeding slightly. The good guys turned the tables as J.J. and Cheetah catapulted Charlie onto Russ, with Ty then diving from the top rope onto Charlie. Ty then followed with a couple of baseball slides as he mistook Charlie's gonads for home plate. Cheetah head butted Inferno with a middle-rope dive. Cheetah and Ty slammed Inferno into the cage. Inferno returned the favor to Ty. Inferno started to climb the cage but was stopped by Cheetah as the two slugged it out straddled on the top of the cage. An escape attempt by Charlie was foiled when J.J. pulled him down. Russ hit Cheetah with a top-rope power bomb. J.J. tried to escape but was pulled down by Charlie. Inferno had pulled the protective patch off of Ty's injured eye and went to work on the red, bloodied exposed eye. Brawling ensued. Cheetah leaped off the top rope, hitting everybody else except Ty. Then, it seemed as if everyone was attempting to escape the cage. Ty was the first one to make it to the floor, and he did it in spectacular fashion, doing a plancha off the top of the cage onto Kevin Kelly on the floor.

Then came the aftermath.

Ugly, to say the least. Intense, to say the most.

Real intense.

Again.

After the match, the BRISCOE BROTHERS came out to exact revenge on the Haases. They battled to the back, as did Street and Kelly. This left Cheetah and J.J. in the ring to celebrate the win. With "Welcome to the Jungle" blaring, Cheetah acknowledged the cheers of the fans but didn't notice that J.J., instead of participating, had padlocked the cage shut. J.J. then went berserk, viciously attacking J.J. as well as referee Peace. Climbing into the cage was JOHNNY MAXX, who met an equally ugly fate from J.J.'s hands. As promoter JIM KETTNER came to the ring with a skeleton key to unlock the cage, J.J. was still going berserk. BOOGIE WOOGIE BROWN and BENNY STOLZFUS came out to try to calm him down. J.J. temporarily came to blows with the commissioner before Brown pushed him away from the ring. J.J. grabbed his championship belt and finally exited, taunting the crowd with "It's mine! Mine for another year!" Cheetah stayed in the ring, acknowledging the "yeah yeah"s and "Cheetah!" chants of the crowd as his music played.
