DOA Memorial Show - August 9, 2000 - Martinsburg, WV Print E-mail
Tuesday, August 08, 2000

Wrestlers from West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania gathered at the Berkeley County Multipurpose Center in Martinsburg, WV, on August 9, to put on a card to honor the memory of Leroy "Tiny" Miller, who wrestled under the name of DOA, and who died earlier this year of complications during an operation. Proceeds from the card, which was organized by West Virginia promoter TYLER "TOMMY HAWK" CATES, were earmarked toward purchasing a headstone for Tiny's grave.

Attendance estimated at 150. Ring provided by DENNIS WIPPRECHT of the MEWF. Ring announcer: TOMMY HAWK, who had been scheduled to wrestle but had to withdraw due to a foot injury. Timekeeper at the bell: JEFF AMDUR. Referees for the evening: PATRICK LAWSON and (injury and all, for the last match) TOMMY HAWK.

Taking pictures at ringside: TIM WALKER. Taping the proceedings: the guys from SMART MARK VIDEO: GARY WALTER, MIKE BURNS, GLENN BOYLE and JIM TITUS. Also present was unique superfan BOBBY BAUM.

The evening got under way with all wrestlers assembling at ringside for a ten-bell salute to LEROY "TINY" MILLER. As announcer Hawk started to talk to the crowd, SWITCHBLADE emerged from the back and demanded that he be allowed to wrestle a hardcore match against anyone in the back brave enough to accept his challenge. JIMMY JANNETTY accepted the challenge, and words and punches were exchanged. Other wrestlers had to come out to separate the two. Hawk announced that Switch and Jimmy would be wrestling hardcore.

MATCH 1: OTTO SHTARK (with JUSTIN CASE) & SERGEANT BRATT (with LIEUTENANT ALEXIS) pinned THE FREAK SHOW (CARNAGE & BLOOD) in 4:36. I will point out that this is not the same wrestler Carnage who wrestles as part of Brute Force in the ECWA. Justin tells the fans not to starta "USA! USA!" chant, so they immediately do the chant, ticking the German Shtark off. The Freaks got an early advantage over Otto with clotheslines, punches and an arm bar; but Bratt weakened Blood with a drop kick, body slam and top rope leg drop. Both bad guys suplexed Blood, and Shtark followed with a leg drop. Case threw Sarge a foreign object, whose use led to Sarge covering for the pin.

MATCH 2: JULIO FANTASTICO pinned THE HURRICANE KID in 3:31. Hurricane had a high-flying repertoire, which he landed periodically on Julio. He got a 2-count after a flying head scissors. El Fantastico bided his time, however, and easily avoided Kid's moonsault attempt. Julio then executed his "near death experience" and then covered for the pin.

Before the next match, LUCIFER (KNIGHT OF THE ROAD) came out carrying his MEWF championship belt. He had been scheduled to wrestle DOA on a September card in the Martinsburg area. Lucifer handed the championship belt over to Tommy Hawk, who declared DOA "the MEWF champion, for this night only", to the applause of the fans.

MATCH 3: "MAD DOG" BUZZ STRYKER pinned CHEF D.Z. GILLESPIE in 7:08. Chef quickly was annoyed by the crowd's chants of "Sta-puf!" and "Doughboy!" and took his anger out early on Stryker. Buzz recovered from being squashed by the 425-pound Chef to land sort of a clothesline, but Buzz fell along with Chef, as he landed his arm on Chef's massive chest region. Dog followed with a partial body slam. Chef sent a fist to Stryker's groin. Buzz hit a flying elbow drop for a 2-count. Chef hit a chefdigree and did the rolling pin on Buzz; however, he then stalled as he went for his giant fork to see if Buzz was done. The fork lied, as Chef, up for a banzai drop, was yanked down off the middle turnbuckle and covered for the pin.

MATCH 4: MORGUS THE MANIAC (with NURSE GRACE & DOC WATSON) pinned NICK "DA BULL" FURY in 9:55. Nick threw Morgus out of the ring early, and Nurse Grace stalled to allow Morgus to get his strength back. Throughout the match Grace and ref Lawson argued, as she deliberately and repeatedly tried to foul up the cadence of Lawson's counts. Morgus grabbed a chair from ringside, but hit himself over the head with it before putting it down and going back to the ring. Morgus got 2-counts after a power bomb and top-rope elbow drop. Grace and the ref were at it again as she complained about slow counts. Morgus joined the argument and got schoolboyed by Nick for a 2-count. Nick got in some punches, a reverse atomic drop and a suplex, getting 2-counts. Maniac kicked Fury who was rebounding off the ropes. He got 2-counts after, respectively, a suplex and three leg drops; again, he argued with ref Lawson and found himself rolled up for a 2-count. Morgus missed his first two attempts at another choke slam before hitting the third and covering Fury for the pin.

MATCH 5: CHUCK E. MANSON (carrying a PINK TELETUBBY) and "HARD ROCK" TERRY ALLEN battled to a 10:00 draw. Early on, Allen hit a double ax-handle off the top rope onto Manson on the floor, getting a 2-count after throwing him back in the ring. Chuck then threw Allen on the ringside table. Brief outside brawling was followed by a return to the ring and Manson suplexes and a leg drop. Hard Rock slammed Chuck. A test of strength was short-cutted when Manson kicked Hard Rock in the testicular area and then delivered a flying Lewinsky. Terry hit a reverse atomic drop and a top-rope dive, covering for a 1-count. Chuck hit a top rope dive. Allen then put Manson in a sleeper as the ten minutes were up and the ref declared a draw.

MATCH 6: RAYNE pinned TONY HIGHTOWER in 3:20. Rayne punched Tony, then walked the ropes before karate-chopping Tony's arm. Rayne got a 2-count, then got another after clotheslining Hightower off the top rope. Tony kicked Rayne's neck and choked him. Then Rayne slammed Tony and pinned him.

MATCH 7: ADAM FLASH & RUCKUS pinned THE GOODFELLAS (ROMEO VALENTINO & DINO CASANOVA) in 17:00 in a match that had the crowd roaring with its approval throughout, definitely the wrestling highlight of the evening. Casanova harangued the crowd only to find him and his partner being tossed out of the ring by Flash and Ruckus. Ruckus followed up with a somersault from the ring apron onto the floor, then dragged the groggy Goodfellas into a position where Adam delivered a top rope leap. Crowd chanted "Call Domino's" at Dino and Romeo. Adam hit an atomic drop and sit in on Dino, then followed with karate kicks and chops. He whipped partner Ruckus into Dino, then moonsaulted onto Dino for a 2-count. As Dino then tried to thwart a sunset flip, he got pantsed. Tagging in, Valentino got whipped into the ropes by Ruckus and top-rope clotheslined by Flash. Adam then hit a neckbreaker and tagged to Ruckus who covered for a 2-count. As Ruckus rebounded off the ropes, he was kneed by Dino, who then tagged in to begin an extended period of domination over Ruckus, who was unable to get to his corner to tag. Dino hit a drop kick and a double-underhook suplex for a 2-count. Romeo got 2-counts after a series of drop kicks. Ruckus powered out of a chin lock but couldn't get to the right corner. In the wrong corner, Ruckus kicked away a charging Romeo twice; but Romeo wound up slamming him. Romeo's abdominal stretch didn't yield a submission. Both Goodfellas delivered a double flapjack and elbow drop to Ruckus. Dino covered for a 2-count as Adam made the save. Romeo suplexed Ruckus. Ruckus tagged to Adam, but the ref didn't see it and he ordered Adam back to the corner. More double teaming of Ruckus ensued. Dino got a 2-count after he and Romeo hit a double Italian leg sweep (tm. Tyler Cates). Out of nowhere, Ruckus was able to apply a neckbreaker to Romeo, and he finally tagged to Adam. Flash whipped Casanova into a corner, then drop kicked Valentino out of the ring. He slammed Dino, then landed a top-rope leg drop, covering for a 2-count as Romeo pulled him out of the ring. Dino slingshotted Adam off the top rope, getting a 2-count, as Adam reversed the combination and got the pin.

The final match of the evening was the promised hardcore matchup, which found TOMMY HAWK, visibly limping, donning the referee's shirt.

MATCH 8: "GEORGIA LIGHTNING" JIMMY JANNETTY pinned SWITCHBLADE (with SAHARA) in a rowdy 13:27. Trash cans, chairs, tins, broomsticks, etc, etc. Jannetty plonked Switch with the cookie sheet, then Switch delivered a garbage can to Jannetty's head. Jimmy chaired Switchblade. Switch sat Jimmy on a chair and clotheslined him. "Dueling chairs" ensued. Jimmy plonked 'Blade with a metal curtain rod. Jimmy slammed the chair onto the cookie tin that happened to be on top of Switchblade's crotch. Putting the chair on the cornered Switch's face, Jannetty charged into the chair. He then whacked Switch with the cookie sheet and a broomstick. Outside the ring, Switch whipped Jimmy into the ring steps. Switch choked Jimmy with the curtain rod, then delivered another cookie sheet whack. Jimmy was bleeding at this point. Trying for a top-rope leap, Switchblade was met by a chair-swinging Jannetty on the way down. Sahara started to argue with ref Hawk. Switch then hit the ref with a clothesline but his momentum also led him to clothesline his valet Sahara. Taking advantage of the momentary disorientation, Jannetty clubbed 'Blade with a chair once more and then covered as the recovered ref counted the fall.

As the fans exited the building, they erupted into a "DOA! DOA!" chant.
